I’ve always pretty much loved watching TV, as a socially awkward child I pretty quickly fell for sitcoms, because you get a group of friends without having to actually do anything! My love has, however, only turned into a bit of an obsession since television is in somewhat of a “golden age.” There are too many options and it’s too easy to watch all of it. So, just as a fun exercise, I decided to make a list of shows the I watch that are currently on the air and/or have been picked up to start within the year:
The Mindy Project
You’re the Worst
Orange is the New Black
Parks and Rec
Girl Meets World
Playing House *
House of Cards
Game of Thrones
American Horror Story
Aaaaaaaand so I may have a problem. Like a real problem, because not on this list are the fact that this summer I delved into the world of Dr. Who (I had to see what the hype was about, and I didn’t want to like it, but I really do…but how could you not love mysterious time traveling aliens?), most days I will watch at least one late night show (I don’t watch any on a daily basis, but my favorites consistently are Conan, The Colbert Report, The Daily Show, and Jimmy Fallon), and the fact that since I acquired some sort of sinus infection and pretty much immediately go home from work to die, I decided to buy season one of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D on blu-ray to console my soul, so you might as well add that to the list soon. Plus, not on this list are all the shows I’ve already watched beginning to end. Multiple times, another side effect of TV’s golden age is the invention of binge watching! So it’s no surprise that I’m my family and friend’s TV show guru, and I want to be yours too. Let me love you. Really, though, take my family and friends advice just let me love you, I’m much less annoying that way.
So here you have it, an all new segment on The Awkward Life I’m calling Let me Love You, Totally Awesome Shows You Probably Aren’t Watching That You Should Be. Or, I suppose for the sake of my sanity, Shows You Should Be Watching. This weeks edition is about FX’s new comedy, You’re the Worst. Since summer can bring a pretty tame TV schedule (it’s almost like they expect us to like go outdoors or something in the summer. Weird…), I was excited to see that FX was releasing a few new comedies. And like any good love story, I unexpectedly fell in love with You’re the Worst.
You’re the Worst is a comedy about two toxic, unlovable characters, Jimmy and Gretchen, who do something they didn’t think they were capable of: they fall in love with each other. The two make an imperfectly-perfect couple,Jimmy is a selfish, British, man-child writer and Gretchen is a self destructive PR rep. Then add in their best friends, Lindsay, who is coping with the fact that she isn’t in love with her husband who she married basically for his money and lifestyle and Edgar, a veteran struggling with addiction and PTSD. Set the whole thing in the beautiful yet soul-sucking Los Angeles, and you wouldn’t think it, but it makes for a charming, lovable, and hilarious show.
What the show does so well is make compelling characters that are, by the traditional sense, not likeable. In fact, they’re all kind of just assholes, but I love it. I’ve been increasingly obsessed with characters that aren’t what a screenwriting teacher might call “likeable” (I’ve argued the case before, specifically about a character that I was writing that was 16 that I wanted to be a brat. I get that she’s not likeable, not what I was going for). It’s a little harder to make a group of douchebags compelling, but if it’s done right then the outcome is that you’ve created a group of very human feeling characters. Real people are pretty fucked up, that doesn’t make them bad people. This show captures that really well, the characters all want to be good. Jimmy wants to be a successful writer, but as anyone who has tried writing knows that can be pretty soul sucking pretty fast. Lindsay wants to be a good housewife for her husband and goes through pretty ridiculous lengths to try (ie when she basically welds her mouth shut to stay on a juice cleanse), but when you’re not in love with your husband it’s pretty hard to be a good wife. So in the end, they’re just a bunch of fuck-ups. Four loveable, funny fuck-ups that I want to tuck in bed and tell them it’s okay because at least they can be fuck ups together (in that sentence I proved my point in how the show is charming and loveable and how real people are really fucked up by showing you my delusional love for fictional characters! Yay!).
So there you have it, if you aren’t watching You’re the Worst, you should start now. It airs Thursday nights at 10:30 pm on FX. Do you watch this show? Do you have any suggestions for me to add to my list? I will warn you, just ask any of my other TV obsessed friends, it might take me a minute to get to it because I have to wait for a lull where I can catch up in a weekend or what have you, but I love suggestions!
